Shannon Airport, Ireland
One of Ireland's three busiest airports, Shannon Airport is located in Shannon, not far from Limerick in the southwest of Ireland and serves around 1.75 million passengers reach year. Major airlines that fly in and out of Shannon Airport include Aer Lingus, Delta Airlines, RyanAir and United Airlines.
Transatlantic routes include Shannon to New York, Toronto, Newark and Boston with flights to Chicago scheduled to begin in the summer of 2013. Shannon is also home base for many European charter flights and also serves cargo carriers such as FedEx, DHL and UPS.
A compact, well-designed single-terminal facility, Shannon is traveller-friendly and offers many conveniences such as friendly staff, free wireless internet, banking, diverse dining options, children's play area, and airport shopping. The shopping is especially nice. In fact, Shannon was the world's first airport to offer duty-free shopping! Today a variety of shops are located throughout an area of the airport called The Loop.
Visitors will want to explore unique Irish goods at Glen Aran Irish Markets and sample luxury items, sweets, gifts, cigarettes, spirits, food, books and more. Shannon offers a "shop and Collect" that allows visitors to pay for items and then pick them up when they arrive so as not to have to carry them on board. Visitors with a little time will also want to sample the Irish Coffee at the Sheridan Pub and Restaurant located in the airport. This luxurious brew is based on the original recipe created by Joe Sheridan, the airport's official chef.
Those with an extended layover can choose to explore nearby sites such as Bunratty Castle, Folkpark, Ailwee Caves, the Burren or the Cliffs of Moher – all of are all within easy driving distance of Shannon Airport. Bus, car rental and taxi service can all be found on airport premises. Parking is also available. Hot top: those headed to the US may be able to clear customs in Shannon! Check with your carrier.
