Hungarian National Opera, Budapest

A center piece of Hungarian architecture, the Hungarian National Opera located in Budapest is a must see. Opening in 1884, it was the most modern Opera House in Europe with the baroque architecture and frescos by Hungary’s master artists. The building showcases a mythological theme carried throughout the marbled columns, gilded paintings, tiled floors and stunning vistas. The rich 120+ year history includes a renovation in 1980 to celebrate 100 years where many of the accoutrements of the current century were added.

There are both Operas and Ballets performed here in season. Dress is traditionally evening wear, and there are a number of restaurants in Andrássy Avenue offering food from coffee house and cafe as well as fine dining. For visitors with children, it is notable that the Opera House has programs specially designed for children ages 4-10.

There are guided tours available daily at 3 PM and 4 PM in multiple languages. Contact the Opera House to confirm availability as these are canceled for special performances. There is no parking on site.
